A community woodland project sat atop the Weald.
Primal Trail Bushcraft is proud to be an integral part of the Wilderness Wood community – a unique, 62 – acre working woodland project nestled in the heart of the High Weald. More than just a location for our courses, it is a creative hub where sustainable forestry, traditional craftsmanship, and community stewardship intersect.

A Living, Working Landscape
Wilderness Wood is a diverse mosaic of sweet-chestnut coppice, majestic beech stands, Scots pine, and giant sequoia. Since Roman times, this land has been managed to provide charcoal and timber; today, that tradition continues through “Continuous Cover Forestry” principles.
For our bushcraft students, this means learning in a forest that is actively cared for, where the materials we gather, from firewood to building structures, are harvested and replenished on-site with a keen eye to improving and creating a vibrant ecosystem.
Facilities & Atmosphere
It is a place built on the philosophy of “low impact, high connection,” featuring hand-built timber structures like the Forestry Barn, the Cook House, and unique woodland “rooms” that serve as our sheltered bases. This semi-anarchic, resilient spirit makes it the perfect environment to disconnect from modern distractions and reconnect with ancestral skills.
While you are immersed in the wild, the site offers thoughtful amenities that enhance the learning experience:
- The Alphabet Trail: A mile-long trail and exploration areas that make the site incredibly welcoming for our family-focused sessions.
- The Hatch & Tea Garden: A gathering spot for local refreshments and community connection.
- Artisan Hub: The wood is home to green woodworkers, artists, and builders, creating an atmosphere of practical creativity that fuels our courses.

THE LANDSCAPE & ETHOS:
Stepping into Wilderness Wood is an invitation to enter a “living laboratory” of sustainable forestry and The Ethos: Connectivity & Creativity. The wood is managed by a dedicated “home team” and a community of over 250 member households.
